What is a City?
In the past Cities were distinguished by their exterior wall, modern Cities are much larger and are not defended by huge walls. So where does a city end and its suburbs begin? Should a city's suburbs be included when calculating population?
Tokyo is considered to be the largest city in the world, a population of around 36million. However this data includes Tokyo's metropolitan region, an area which includes Japan's second largest city Yokohama along with 86 other towns and cities.
The Population of 'Tokyo proper' is about 8.5 million.
So should a city's population and size be calculated purely by the city core? If this was to be the case, Tokyo would drop right down the list to 14th, and Shanghai would be the new largest city with a population of almost 18 million.
So what do you think? Should Shanghai be classed as the largest city in the world? or should Tokyo maintain it's title?
